I got back OK from what I have dubbed "My most mad ski trip yet?”. It was mad with all the travelling, but it was worth the effort. I had survived. Or so I thought — a cough was starting.

Las Vegas

Las Vegas is a strange place. And I am still not sure what to make of it apart from it is not my kind of place. It was “too”:

  • Too noisy
  • Too busy
  • Too loud
  • Too tacky
  • Too weird

The skiing was good. We planned to ski Tahoe but abandoned the idea after reading the snow reports. Instead, we went to Park City, which was a good move as we had a great time.

The Park City area also lacked snow, but the guys who looked after the slopes had done a fantastic job.

Over the six days of skiing, we managed to ski:

  • Park City — reasonable snow, but the mountain needed investment.
  • Canyons (formerly Wolf Mountain) — we skied Canyons for two days. There had been a lot of investment in the mountain over the last 20 years, and it had expanded. The snow was excellent and a lot of fun.
  • Deer Valley —  not great, no plans to go back.
  • Alta — fantastic, best ski area on the trip.
  • Snowbird — was also excellent and up there with Alta.
  • Solitude — another good little ski area.

The skiing was great, and considering the lack of snow in Utah, it was much better than I expected.

Road Trips

The road trips, the drives to and from Las Vegas to Park City — 8 hours each way, were great fun.

The drive from Las Vegas north was fascinating as the desert of Las Vegas slowly gave way to the mountains of Utah. The drive back was incredible as we went to Zion National Park.

Fantastic! The park had excellent rock structures and stunning views. It was also good to be there in the early season as the place was quiet. Two of the trails we did near the hotel were busy, but on The Watchman Trail, a 2-hour hike, we had pretty much to ourselves. The park was stunning, with some remarkable canyons and rock structures — a geologist’s dream.

Summary

Overall a great trip, and it was well worth the effort of 48 hours of travelling.
