Exploring Sibu

Central Scientific Co. — Sibu, Sarawak, Malaysia

As a scientist, this is my favourite shop in Sibu, Sarawak — the Central Scientific Co.

They had a great display of beakers, flasks, and measuring cylinders in the window when I visited.

But sadly, the rest of the store behind the excellent front window appeared empty.

Well, every town needs one.

Coffee at the Bread Sense Bakery, Sibu, Sarawak, Malaysia

After the poor breakfast at the RH Hotel, I would usually pop across the road to get a coffee at Bread Sense.

Bread Sense was an interesting shop selling tea, coffee, cakes, bread, buns, and snacks. Well worth checking out.

One thing they sold was the Sibu Bagel.

The Sibu Bagel

This is a Sibu Bagel….

It was smaller than what I would think of as a bagel, but it tasted like a bagel and had the texture of a bagel. All it required was toasting and some cream cheese.

Around town — Sibu, Sarawak, Malaysia

Sibu is an intriguing town.

The town is old or feels old in parts but new in others. There seem to have been times of prosperity when significant investment occurred, but now it all felt a little run down. The town is isolated and, at the same time, connected, as it is an important river port where large ships transfer goods to smaller boats for trafficking upriver.

It does seem to be a town of contrasts.

For me, the attractions in the town are the river and the boats, and the covered (day) and night markets.
