Malaysia — Malacca — Church of St Francis Xavier’s, and Little India, (Jalan Bendahara), Malacca, Malaysia

Wandering around Malacca

June 2015

I spent an afternoon exploring Malacca. What did I find?

Church of St Francis Xavier’s

Church of St Francis Xavier’s,12, Jalan Banda Kaba, 75000 Malacca, Melaka, Malaysia, is another example of colonial architecture in Malacca.

The church was built by Father Farvé, in 1856, in honour of St. Francis Xavier.

The site originally contained an old Portuguese church.

At one time, the church was the largest church built by the Paris Foreign Missionary in the Malay Peninsula.

St Francis Xavier’s Church still serves as a Catholic church, with regular mass services being held.

Little India

Little India, Jalan Bendahara in Malacca was a bit of a disappointment as I was expecting something similar to the Little Indias I have come across in other parts of Malaysia, with my favourites being in George Town, Penang and Kuching, East Malaysia.

The Little India in Malacca was just a street with a small collection of shops, and there was nothing particular ‘Little India’ about it.

The area consists of rows of shops/houses dominated by Indian traders along Jalan Bendahara. Most of the shops sold clothing, food, household goods, prayer equipment and flowers. A big disappointment.
