What is it with Kuching and cats?

I have been told that Kuching means cat; however, when I put Kuching in Google Translate and select Malay to English, I get back Kuching.

However, as the town seems obsessed with cats, I will assume that Kuching does mean cat. Because if it doesn’t mean cat, all the cat sculptures, T-shirts and cat-related material on sale in the town would be bizarre.
