Anyone for tea?

August 2015

The Cameron Highlands is famous for several things (more on that later), and one of them is tea.

By August 2015, I had lived in Malaysia for two years, and my favourite local tea was Boh Tea from the Highlands. Boh Tea makes a good cuppa — far better than Lipton Yellow Label rubbish — so I was looking forward to visiting some tea plantations and learning about the process.

The first plantation I stopped at was the Cameron Valley Tea House (not Boh Tea), located on the main road north of Tringkap (there are at least three Cameron Valley Tea Houses in the Cameron Highlands).

The cost of a pot of tea for two was RM9 (£1.80 UK; $2.40 US), and it was good.

Interestingly, the tea was ‘pre-made’ in that there were no leaves (or bags) in the pot. I guess this was done, so you are assured that you get the tea at its best (the tea will still stew, though).

The teashop offered free Wi-Fi, and there was also a gift shop. I found it to be enjoyable to be drinking tea outside in the cool and refreshing air of the Highlands while watching tea grow on the hillside.

I liked the look of the tea plants. Very neat and organised.

As far as I could tell, the only tour of the plantation offered was on quad bikes or in a Land Rover.
